Literature type:
case study
Publication year:

The Tietze-Syndrome is described as “good-natured”, painful, non-purulent and local swelling of the Costalis, the Sernoclaviculars or the Costochondral Joints. It mostly effects the 2nd or 3rd rib. Until now, there is no sufficient physiotherapeutical treatment known of. This case study describes the Medical Taping Concept (MTC) as additional means for physiotherapeutical treatment of a patient with Tietze-Syndrome.

Patient: The case study is about a 24-year-old female with Tietze-Syndrome. The  following problems became manifested here: Swelling, thickening and pain in the upper part of the chest, radiating pain in arm and shoulder as well as an aching and constricted upper back. Regular changes improvements occured the same way as changes for the worse. The symptomatical ways of treatment did not have any effect.
Interventions: The MTC in combination with physiotherapeutical mobilizing, excercise-therapy and advice.

The “VAS” in the pain area was reduced on an average of 73,9%, the swelling of the 2nd and the 3rd rib disappeared and functioning in daily life improved for 78,5%.

A further (follow-up) study has to be arranged for, with a higher patient population (more subjects), which would make it possible to compare different interventions.

MTC in combination with physiotherapeutical mobilizing, excercise therapy and well-directed advice might be a sufficient therapy for patients suffering from Tietze-Syndrome and can achieve more than the sole treatment of the symptomes.
